Beside the pond
Now this is how I like to get some writing done.
I’ve spent a week at a friend’s Mississippi farm putting my next book in manuscript form. Johnny and Deb Wray — hospitality in the flesh — raise grass-fed beef and lambs. Horses, hens and a rooster, dogs and a cat named Gracie fill out the domestic side. Wildlife lingers in a nearby wood.
The Wrays have a small, well-furnished cabin on a pond. The place is called Grateful House.* The pond might as well be Walden’s.
During the week:
A flock of geese bark overhead early one morning. A pair come down to rest on the water and to ramble in a dignified walk on shore for a couple of hours. Steers across the way stare when I sit on the porch. They know humans bring them some extra feed now and then.
Deer cross the farm road at dusk.
A stray cat creeps across a field. Turtles poke their heads out of the water just to see the world’s still at peace. The pond’s so full of fish you wouldn’t think there’d be room for reptilian life.
Birds flit, fly, flutter or denounce my presence, as in the case of a chattering woodpecker.
If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a soaring bald eagle.
Grateful for such a perfect setting, I am.

"To write, read. Then read more.”
A writer comes in various forms. Author. Reporter. Critic. Dramatist. Scribbler. Essayist. Novelist. Poet. Correspondent. Wordsmith.
By any name, one should hold to a personal code, a kind of guiding shibboleth. Mine: the writer’s purpose and sole usefulness is to make words sing, sling, sting or swing. More

Ann Lee’s choice was as light a decision as they come: To turn her SUV into a Sonic Drive-In for lunch. Bob Lee’s choice was among the heaviest: To try forgiving the murderous trio who carjacked his wife in Sonic’s slot No. 22. Our life journeys are filled with intersections and choices, big and small. Author David Wayne Brown, with Bob Lee, takes us on a harrowing trip with heart-stopping turns. The ride starts with a nightmare and grows even darker on an isolated farm road. But thanks to the human spirit this journey does not end there.”
